Excavation Day for the Kids!

@

On Sept. 22, 2001, the museum hosted an excavation training day for elementary and junior high school students. The goal of the class was to give students a feel for doing archaeological excavations, and some post-excavation work like mapping and interpretation.

"Sites", replicating Jomon pit-house floors, were made in large timber boxes.  The floor consisted of large, flat stones; atop of the floor was scattered a variety of food remains and lithics.

As with any government project involving digging, there were plenty of on-lookers!

Excavation took awhile, but after about 2 hours....

The house pit floors and the artifacts were revealed!

Then the students were given the task of mapping the features.
